에스더 3장과 6장 (Esther Chapters 3 and 6)

1. 왕궁의 문지기 (The Gatekeeper of the King's Gate)

페르시아의 도성 수산궁의 문지기로 모르드개라는 유대인이 근무를 했습니다. 성경에는 단순히 문지기라고 표시했지만 단순한 수비병이 아니라 적어도 수문장 정도의 자리에 있었던 것 같습니다.

A Jew named Mordecai worked as a gatekeeper at the citadel of Susa in Persia. Although the Bible simply refers to him as a gatekeeper, he was likely not a mere guard, but held a position akin to the captain of the palace gate.

그런데 이 사람은 바로 현재 페르시아 왕의 아내인 와스디의 사촌오빠였습니다. 그것도 단순한 사촌오빠가 아니라 고아가 된 와스디를 딸처럼 키워온 사촌오빠였습니다. 포로의 후손으로 두 남매가 서로 의지하며 자랐기에 여느 사촌 오누이보다도 더 정이 깊었을 것입니다. 그러므로 모르드개는 한마디로 막강한 배경을 가진 사람이었습니다.

Furthermore, this man was the cousin of Vashti, the current queen of Persia. He was not just an ordinary cousin; he had raised the orphaned Vashti as his own daughter. As descendants of captives, the two grew up relying entirely on each other, forging a bond far deeper than that of typical cousins. In short, Mordecai possessed an incredibly powerful background.

여하튼 이 사람은 자기의 사촌 여동생이 왕후가 된 뒤에도 여전히 왕궁의 수문장 자리에서 충실히 근무를 하고 있었는데,

Nevertheless, even after his cousin became the queen, he continued to faithfully fulfill his duties at his post by the king's gate.

2. 왕 암살 음모를 적발하다 (Thwarting the Assassination Plot)

우연히 내시 빅단과 데레스 두 사람의 왕 암살 음모를 발견하고 이를 와스디에게 알려서 왕의 목숨을 구하게 되는 엄청난 공을 세우게 되었습니다. 보통 왕궁에는 여자들이 많이 있습니다. 특히 페르시아의 왕궁에는 하렘이라고 해서 후궁들이 기거하는 여인들만의 궁전이 따로 있습니다.

By chance, he discovered a plot by two eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, to assassinate the king. He reported this to Vashti, thereby saving the king’s life—an extraordinary achievement. Typically, a royal palace houses many women. In Persia, there was a separate palace exclusively for women, known as the harem, where the concubines resided.

그러므로 모든 거세하지 않은 남자들은 해가 지면 수비병사들을 제외하고는 모두 궁을 나가야 되고, 단지 궁 안에는 거세한 내시들만 거하게 되고 이들이 왕을 가까이서 모시게 됩니다. 따라서 내시들의 권한은 엄청난 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 왕들은 내시들을 총애할 수밖에 없었고 여러 가지 권세가 내시들에게 집중되었습니다.

Consequently, all uncastrated men, except for the guards, had to leave the palace at sunset. Only the castrated eunuchs remained inside, attending closely to the king. Naturally, the authority vested in these eunuchs was immense. The kings had no choice but to favor them, allowing a concentration of vast power in their hands.

자, 성욕을 충족시킬 수 없는 욕구불만의 내시들은 권력과 돈에 남다른 집착을 보이게 되고, 자연적으로 권력과 부의 획득을 위한 음모가 끊일 새가 없었습니다. 한마디로 궁전은 내시들의 음모가 득시글대는 복마전이라고 할 수 있습니다. 마귀가 엎드려 있는 곳.

Driven by the frustrations of their condition, these eunuchs often developed a singular obsession with wealth and power. Consequently, the palace became a hotbed of endless conspiracies to seize control and riches. In a word, the court was a pandemonium of intrigue, a den where schemers crouched like demons waiting to strike.

3. 그러나 상은 없었다 (Yet, There Was No Reward)

페르시아에서는 특별히 왕의 암살 음모가 비일비재했고 따라서 왕들은 자기의 숙소를 수시로 바꾸면서 암살을 모면하려 애쓰는 등 왕의 안전에 무엇보다 많은 관심과 노력이 기울여졌습니다.

In Persia, assassination plots against the monarch were incredibly common. Kings constantly moved between different quarters to evade death, expending immense effort and attention on their personal security above all else.

그런데 바로 그 암살 음모, 더구나 왕을 가장 가까이서 모시는 내시들의 암살 음모를 모르드개가 적발해서 왕의 목숨을 살리는 큰 공을 세웠던 것입니다. 당연히 큰 상을 내려야 마땅합니다.

Yet, it was precisely such a plot—one engineered by the very eunuchs who guarded the king’s inner chambers—that Mordecai uncovered, saving the sovereign’s life. By all accounts, he was due a magnificent reward.

분명히 와스디가 모르드개가 왕의 암살 음모를 적발했다고 아하수에로 왕에게 이야기하고 왕의 앞에서 모르드개의 이름이 왕실 일기에 기록되었음에도 불구하고, 왠일인지 모르드개에게 어떠한 상도 내려지지 않았습니다.

Even though Vashti informed King Ahasuerus that Mordecai had exposed the conspiracy, and Mordecai’s name was formally recorded in the book of the chronicles in the king's presence, for some inexplicable reason, no honor or reward was bestowed upon him.

물론 모르드개가 와스디의 사촌오빠라는 사실을 왕이 알았더라면 사정이 조금 달라졌을지도 모르겠습니다. 허나 왠일인지 모르드개는 와스디에게 왕후가 되고 난 다음에도 그가 유대인이라는 사실을 왕에게 알리지 못하도록 했고 자기와의 관계도 밝히지 못하게 했던 것입니다.

Perhaps things would have been different had the king known Mordecai was the queen's cousin. However, for reasons of his own, Mordecai had strictly charged her, even after she ascended the throne, not to reveal her nationality or her relationship to him.

4. 상은 엉뚱한 사람에게 (The Reward Went to the Wrong Person)

왕은 이 암살 음모에 접하자마자 혼비백산해서 하만을 불러서 이 음모를 밝히게 했고 두 명의 내시를 취조하여 증거를 잡고는 그들을 처벌하는데 정신이 팔려서, 정작 모르드개에게는 어떤 상도 내리지 않고 까맣게 잊어버렸습니다.

Upon hearing of the plot, the panicked king immediately summoned Haman to investigate. Consumed entirely by the interrogation, the gathering of evidence, and the execution of the two eunuchs, the king completely forgot about Mordecai, leaving him unrewarded.

그런데 더 황당한 것은 이 사건을 취조한 하만에게 왕이 총리대신의 직위를 내려 벼락출세를 시켜버린 것이었습니다.

What makes it even more absurd is that the king elevated Haman—the man who merely conducted the interrogation—to the position of prime minister, granting him a sudden and meteoric rise in status.

솔직히 왕 암살 음모를 적발하는 게 어렵습니까, 사람을 고문해서 증거를 밝히는 게 어렵습니까? 분명히 암살 음모를 밝히는 게 더 어려움에도 불구하고 왕은 모르드개의 공에 대해서는 까맣게 잊고 하만에게 높은 상을 내려 그를 총리대신으로 승격시켜버리고 말았습니다.

Honestly, which is more difficult: uncovering a hidden assassination plot, or torturing a confession out of suspects? Clearly, exposing the conspiracy required far greater vigilance, yet the king completely overlooked Mordecai’s loyalty, instead heapng honors upon Haman and promoting him to the highest office in the land.

이제 왕은 왕궁 문을 지날 때마다 모두 하만에게 꿇어앉아서 경배하도록 명을 내렸습니다. 이렇게 되자 자연 사람들은 앞다투어 그에게 경배하며 아부하여 그의 환심을 사기에 바빴습니다. 기가 찹니다.

The king then commanded that everyone at the royal gate must bow down and pay homage to Haman whenever he passed. Naturally, people scrambled to prostrate themselves, flattering Haman to win his favor. It was utterly preposterous.

도대체 저 자리에 앉아야 할 사람이 누구입니까? 자, 여러분 어떻습니까? 모르드개는 든든한 빽이 있었습니다. 그는 빽을 사용하지 않았습니다. 그래서 그는 여전히 문지기였고, 왕의 암살 음모를 적발한 엄청난 공을 세웠음에도 엉뚱한 사람이 그 공을 가로채어서 여전히 문지기에 불과하게 되었습니다. 오히려 적은 수고를 한 하만에게 제일 큰 공이 돌아가고 하만이 총리대신이 되어서 거들먹거리게 된 것입니다. 그것도 매일같이 그의 눈앞에서. 여러분 같으면 어떻게 하겠습니까?

Who was the one who truly deserved that seat? Consider this: Mordecai had a powerful connection, yet he refused to exploit it. As a result, he remained a mere gatekeeper. Even after saving the empire from a coup, another man usurped the credit, leaving Mordecai at the gates while Haman, who put in far less effort, reaped the ultimate reward and flaunted his power right before Mordecai's eyes every single day. How would you have reacted in his shoes?

5. 하나님 때문에 위기에 빠지다 (Endangered Because of God)

하만이 벼락출세를 했기 때문에 왕은 다른 대신들이 그를 투기하고 시기할까 봐 그에게 경배하라는 특별명령을 내려두고 있는 상황에서, 하만이 궁문을 지날 때 많은 신하들이 그를 만나서 그 앞에 즐거이 무릎을 꿇고 경배하였는데도 불구하고 모르드개만은 절대로 그 앞에서 무릎도 꿇지 않고 경배도 하지 않았습니다.

Because of Haman's sudden rise, the king had issued a special decree commanding everyone to bow to him, anticipating jealousy from other officials. Thus, while the royal servants gladly knelt and paid homage whenever Haman passed, Mordecai steadfastly refused to bow or show him reverence.

모든 사람이 엎드리는데 고개를 뻣뻣이 들고 서있는 모르드개를 하만이 보았지만, 그래도 자기가 모르드개의 공을 가로챈 것이므로 애써서 그 무례를 무시하였습니다. 물론 속으로야 부글부글 끓었지요. '이놈 어디 두고 보자.' 그러나 화만 내고 두고 보자고 속으로만 벼를 뿐 어떤 구체적인 행동은 취하지 않았습니다.

Haman noticed Mordecai standing tall and rigid while everyone else prostrated themselves. However, knowing deep down that he had stolen credit for Mordecai's deed, Haman consciously chose to ignore the insolence at first. Outwardly indifferent, his anger boiled within: 'Just you wait.' Yet, he merely brooded, taking no immediate action.

이를 보고 동료들은 처음에는 왜 너는 절을 하지 않느냐고 위협합니다. 그러나 그 위협이 먹혀들지 않자 이제는 좋은 말로 절을 하도록 권고합니다. 이건 유혹이지요. 그래도 거절하자 화가 난 동료들은 그가 어떻게 되는지를 보기 위해 하만에게 모르드개의 출신 민족을 고합니다.

Seeing this, Mordecai's colleagues first threatened him, demanding to know why he disobeyed the king's command. When threats failed, they tried to persuade him with gentle words—a subtle temptation. When he refused them as well, the frustrated officials, eager to see how far his defiance would go, informed Haman of Mordecai's nationality.

모르드개의 출신 민족은 유대인입니다. 여러분 왜 유대인인 것이 하만에게 문제가 되는지 아십니까? 그러고 보면 모르드개가 일전에 에스더에게 자기의 민족을 고하지 말라고 당부하던 말이 생각납니다.

Mordecai was a Jew. Do you know why being a Jew posed such a critical problem for Haman? This brings to mind Mordecai’s earlier warning to Esther, strictly charging her not to reveal her kindred.

페르시아는 적어도 127개 민족으로 이루어진 다민족 국가이며 각 민족을 포용하는 관용정책을 펴고 있습니다. 그런데 어떻게 해서 유대인인 것을 알리지 말라고 했을까요? 그것은 사람들이 유대인을 싫어했기 때문입니다. 왜 싫어했을까요? 그것은 그들이 하나님을 섬겼기 때문입니다.

The Persian Empire was a vast, multi-ethnic state comprising at least 127 provinces, generally practicing a policy of cultural tolerance. Why, then, did he insist on hiding their identity? It was because the people harbored a deep-seated animosity toward the Jews. And why the hatred? Because they worshipped the one true God.

이상하지요? 하나님을 섬기는 것하고 사람들이 유대인을 싫어하는 것하고 무슨 상관이 있을까요? 사실 페르시아 사람들은 조로아스터교를 국교로 하지만 역시나 다른 민족의 여러 신들도 함께 섬겼습니다. 즉 다신교를 믿었다 이 말입니다. 그런데 유독 유대인만은 신은 하나님 한 분뿐이라면서 자기네들이 믿는 신들을 우상취급을 하니 어찌 사람들이 유대인을 좋아할 수가 있겠습니까?

It seems peculiar, doesn't it? What does worshipping God have to do with public animosity? While the Persians observed Zoroastrianism as their state religion, they readily embraced the pantheons of other nations; they were polytheists. Yet, the Jews alone insisted that there is only one God, dismissing all other deities as mere idols. How could the surrounding cultures ever look favorably upon such a people?

그런데 더 큰 문제는 하만이 바로 아말렉의 왕족이라는 것입니다. 아각 사람은 바로 아말렉족의 왕가를 말하는 것 같습니다. 여러분이 성경을 열심히 읽었다면 이스라엘과 아말렉과의 피비린내 나는 싸움의 역사를 알 수 있을 것입니다.

But the far graver issue was Haman’s lineage: he was royalty of Amalek. The designation 'Agagite' points directly to the royal house of the Amalekites. Anyone who reads the Scriptures closely is familiar with the blood-soaked history of enmity between Israel and Amalek.

이스라엘 초대 왕 사울이 제일 먼저 한 것도 바로 아말렉을 친 것이었고 하나님은 아말렉을 모두 진멸하라는 무시무시한 명령을 내릴 정도의 원수였던 것입니다.

The very first major military campaign of Israel’s first king, Saul, was against the Amalekites. Indeed, the hostility was so profound that God had issued a terrifying decree to utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

바로 이 원수지간인 아말렉의 왕족인 하만이 안 그래도 미웠던 모르드개가 유대인인 것을 알자 즉시로 태도를 돌변해서 모르드개를 해할 계획을 세웠습니다. 불쾌하게 여겼던 데서 이제 구체적으로 모르드개를 죽일 계획을 세웁니다. 왜냐하면 그가 절대 용서하지 못할 유대인이므로.

The moment Haman, a prince of this blood-rival clan, discovered that the insolent gatekeeper was a Jew, his hidden resentment instantly hardened into a deadly plot. Mild annoyance transformed into a calculated scheme of execution, for Mordecai belonged to the one race Haman could never forgive.

6. 악인들의 계획 (The Plot of the Wicked)

하만은 모르드개가 유대인임을 알자 모르드개 혼자만 죽이는 것이 너무 가볍다고 생각해서 아예 이번 기회에 유대인들을 전부 몰살시키려는 계획을 세웠습니다. 그리고는 왕에게 나아가 유대인들을 참소합니다.

Upon learning of Mordecai's heritage, Haman deemed it insufficient to destroy him alone. Instead, he plotted to utilize this opportunity to completely annihilate all the Jews throughout the entire empire. He then approached the king to slander them.

당시 동방의 왕들은 현인신으로 여겨졌고 그렇게 경배를 받았습니다. 하만에게 절하는 것도 바로 이 왕에게만 하는 신에 대한 경배를 총리대신에게까지 하도록 한 것이었기 때문에 우상숭배를 금하는 율법에 따라 모르드개가 하지 않았던 것입니다.

In the ancient Near East, monarchs were revered as living gods. The command to bow to Haman essentially extended this divine reverence to the prime minister—a practice Mordecai could not follow due to the Law prohibiting idolatry.

바로 이겁니다. 즉 하만은 왕에게 "왕은 신으로서 모든 백성들이 왕께 경배를 드리고 왕께 예배하는데 유독 유대인들만은 왕의 신상에 절하지 않고 섬기지 않고 이를 우상이라고 멸시한다. 만일 이들을 그대로 둔다면 나쁜 물이 다른 민족들에게도 퍼져서 왕의 권위가 떨어지면 왕이 제국을 다스리는데 크게 어려움이 있을 것이며 감히 왕께 맞서는 이들에게 왕은 신위를 보여서 다스려야 할 것"이라고 왕을 꼬드깁니다.

This was his lever. Haman subtly manipulated the king, arguing: "Your Majesty is a living deity whom all subjects worship. Yet, a certain people refuses to bow before your image, despising your decrees as idolatry. If left unchecked, their rebellion will infect other nations, undermining your royal authority and destabilizing the empire. You must demonstrate your divine wrath against those who dare oppose you."

세상에 모든 거짓말은 들통이 나도 아부만은 결코 들통이 나지 않는다고 이러한 아부가 왕을 얼마나 기쁘게 했는지 왕은 즉각 유대인을 멸하는 조서에 도장을 찍고 말았습니다. 그전에 물론 하만은 왕에게 은 일만 달란트의 거액을 뇌물로 드렸고 하만은 유대인들을 죽이고서 그들의 재산을 빼앗아서 뇌물로 나간 금액을 보충하게 될 것입니다. 이른바 꿩 먹고 알 먹고 이고 누이 좋고 매부 좋고의 식도 되는 기가 막힌 계교를 꾸민 것입니다.

They say that while all lies eventually surface, flattery never fails to deceive. This sycophancy so delighted the king that he immediately affixed the royal signet ring to the decree of annihilation. To smooth the way, Haman had offered a massive bribe of ten thousand talents of silver to the king's treasury, intending to recoup the sum by plundering the possessions of the slaughtered Jews. It was a cunning, cold-blooded scheme designed to enrich himself while eliminating his foes—killing two birds with one stone.

7. 그러나 하나님은 잊지 않으신다 (But God Does Not Forget)

마침내 유대인 몰살 조서는 전국 각지로 퍼져나가고 조서의 시행을 위한 준비가 이루어지고 있을 때, 하만은 왕후 에스더의 잔치에 왕과 단둘이만 초대받는 영광을 누립니다.

As the royal decree to massacre the Jews spread to every province and preparations for its execution got underway, Haman enjoyed the singular honor of being the only guest invited to accompany the king to Queen Esther's private banquet.

기분이 좋아서 잔치자리를 물러나던 하만은 모르드개가 자기를 보고 움직이지도 않고 경의를 표하지도 않는 것을 보고는, 유대인을 몰살하는 그날까지 기다릴 수 없을 만큼 화가 치밀어서 그를 죽일 방법을 자기의 아내하고 모사들과 의논을 하고는 그를 장대에 달기 위해 왕의 승인을 얻기 위해 이른 아침 왕의 침전 앞에 기다리고 있었습니다. 오십 규빗의 높은 나무에 모르드개를 달려고 나무 장대도 준비하고... 모르드개를 먼저 죽이고 왕후의 잔치에 나가려고 희희낙락하며 왕이 기침하기만을 기다리고 있습니다.

Exiting the banquet in high spirits, Haman’s joy instantly turned to blinding rage when he saw Mordecai at the king’s gate, refusing to stand or show the slightest sign of deference. Unable to wait for the official day of slaughter, he rushed home to consult his wife and advisors. He set up a gallows fifty cubits high and hurried to the palace court in the early hours of the morning, eager to obtain the king's permission to hang Mordecai immediately. Gloating over the prospect of executing his enemy before attending the next banquet, he waited impatiently for the king to awaken.

8. 전화위복 (A Divine Reversal of Fortune)

한편 그날 밤 왕은 잠을 이루지 못합니다. 사실 페르시아의 왕들은 암살을 겁내어서 밤에 처소를 옮기며 불면의 밤을 보내는 일이 많았다고 합니다. 특히 변덕쟁이에다가 독재자였던 아하수에로 왕은 더 많은 신변의 위협을 느껴서 불면의 밤들을 보내는 날이 많았는데 이날도 이런저런 이유로 잠이 오지 않아서 문득 자기의 지난 날들을 반성하려는 생각으로 왕의 궁중 일기를 읽게 되었습니다.

That very night, sleep fled from the king. Persian monarchs, constantly terrified of assassination, frequently endured sleepless nights, often shifting between chambers. Ahasuerus, a temperamental despot, was particularly plagued by such anxieties. Unable to rest, he commanded that the book of the memorable deeds, the chronicles, be brought and read before him, perhaps seeking a reflection on his reign.

당연히 왕이 직접 읽지는 않겠죠. 신하가 일기를 가져다가 펴고 읽는데 참 희한합니다. 하필이면 몇 년 전 모르드개가 빅다나와 데레스의 왕 암살 음모를 적발한 대목을 읽게 되었습니다. 그 많은 내용 가운데 하필이면 그 부분을 읽게 되다니........

Of course, the king did not read it himself. A servant opened the records and began to read, and by a remarkable orchestration of providence, he happened upon the exact passage recording how Mordecai had exposed the assassination plot of Bigthana and Teresh years prior. Out of the vast volumes of history, the reader opened to that very page.

왕은 즉시로 신하에게 모르드개에게 어떤 상을 주었는지를 물어봅니다. 그런데 놀랍게도 어떤 상도 주지 않았답니다. 세상에 이럴 수가 있습니까? 자기에게 가장 큰 공을 세운 사람에게 어떤 상도 내리지 않았다니. 그래서 왕은 급히 왕명을 전할 신하를 찾았는데 바로 그때 왕의 침소 앞에 있던 사람은 하만이었습니다.

The king immediately stopped the reading and asked what honor or dignity had been bestowed on Mordecai for this. To his astonishment, the servants replied, "Nothing has been done for him." How could such a monumental oversight occur? The man who saved the crown had been completely neglected. The king urgently called for an official in the court, and at that precise moment, Haman was standing outside.

하만은 모르드개를 나무에 빨리 달고 싶어서 아침을 기다리지 못하고 왕궁의 문을 여는 새벽부터 와서 왕이 기침하기를 기다리고 있었던 것입니다.

Haman had arrived at the outer court at the break of dawn, unable to contain his eagerness to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared.

왕은 하만을 불러서 하만에게 "내가 가장 기뻐하는 사람에게 어떤 상을 내려야 하겠는가?"고 물어보았습니다. 왕이 가장 총애하는 사람이 하만 말고 또 누가 있겠습니까. 즉시 하만은 자기에게 상을 내릴 줄 알고는 평소에 자기가 하고 싶었던 일들을 모조리 이야기합니다.

The king summoned Haman and posed a question: "What shall be done for the man whom the king delights to honor?" Believing there was no one the king would wish to honor more than himself, Haman immediately laid out his grandest, most self-serving desires.

즉 본문에 나온대로 왕의 말에 그 사람을 태우되 왕복을 입히고 왕의 총신이 그 말의 고삐를 잡고는 성중을 다니면서 '왕이 존귀케하기를 기쁘하는 사람에게는 이같이 할것이라'고 외치고 다녔으면 좋겠다고 이야기합니다.

He suggested that the man be clothed in royal robes the king himself had worn, mounted upon a horse the king had ridden, and led through the city square by one of the king's most noble princes, proclaiming aloud: "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!"

하만은 문제의 상 받을 자가 자기인 줄 알고 그런 이야기를 한 것인데 놀랍게도 상 받을 사람은 자기가 아니라 자기의 원수인 모르드개가 아닙니까! 정말 기가 차고 부끄럽고 원통합니다. 하루 종일 모르드개의 말고삐를 잡고 성중에서 고래고래 외치고 그는 부끄러움과 번민에 싸여 집으로 돌아가고 말았습니다.

Haman spoke these words assuming the prize was his. Imagine his unutterable shock and humiliation when the king commanded him to do exactly as he said—not for himself, but for his mortal enemy, Mordecai the Jew! Utterly devastated, Haman spent the day leading his nemesis's horse through the streets, shouting praises, before slinking back to his house, mourning and with his head covered.

모르드개를 나무에 달겠다고 이를 허락해 달라는 말은 정작 꺼내지도 못한 채로 나중에는 하만의 총리대신의 자리가 모르드개에게 가고 그가 모은 모든 재산과 집은 에스더의 차지가 됩니다. 하하, 하나님은 그런 분입니다. 아마 하만은 총리대신으로 엄청난 치부를 한 것 같습니다. 그러니까 왕에게 은 일만 달란트를 뇌물로 바치죠. 여하튼 그 엄청난 재물과 애써서 가꾼 집은 모두 자기의 원수의 손에 넘어가고 자기와 그 열 아들은 모두 자기가 준비한 그 나무에 달리게 되었습니다.

He never even had the chance to utter his request for the execution. Ultimately, Haman's office was given to Mordecai, and his vast estate passed into the hands of Esther. This is how God operates. Haman had undoubtedly amassed a fortune through corruption, which explains how he could casually offer ten thousand talents of silver. Yet, every bit of that ill-gotten wealth and his luxurious estate fell into the hands of his enemy, and Haman, along with his ten sons, was impaled upon the very gallows he had constructed.

여러분이 부당하게 자기의 공을 다른 이에게 빼앗겼습니까? 내가 세운 공인데 사람들이 알아주지 않습니까? 오히려 자기가 세운 공으로 인해서 출세한 원수가 자기를 핍박합니까? 그런데도 하나님은, 정의와 공의의 하나님은 도대체 아무 응답이 없습니까? 오히려 소위 자기 자녀들의 하나님이 아니라 대적을 이롭게 하는 정신나간 신인 것 같습니까? 아니 이 세상에 하나님의 공의란 건 존재하지 않는 것 같습니까?

Have you ever had your hard-earned credit unfairly snatched away by another? Have you accomplished great things, only to be met with total indifference, while a rival prospers on your efforts and turns around to oppress you? Does it feel as though the God of justice remains silent, acting not as a defender of His children, but as a passive observer favoring the wicked? Have you wondered if divine justice is merely an illusion in this world?

그러나 내가 주어진 자리에서 묵묵히 인내하며 충성한다면 하나님의 놀라운 축복이 머지않은 장래에 우리에게 주어질 것임을 저는 믿습니다. 비록 현실이 나를 불만족스럽게 하고 나의 믿음을 흔들어도 끝까지 하나님을 믿고 나간다면 정말로 뜻하지 않았던 장소에서 뜻하지 않았던 놀라운 축복이 여러분을 기다릴 것입니다. 저는 그것을 믿습니다. 왜입니까? 그는 공의로우신 하나님이며 사랑의 하나님이며 그의 백성을 눈동자같이 살피시고 계신 전능자이시기 때문입니다.

Yet, I firmly believe that if we remain steadfast, quietly fulfilling our duties and maintaining our integrity where we are planted, God’s remarkable vindication will unfold in due time. Though reality may disappoint you and test the boundaries of your faith, if you hold fast to Him, an unexpected blessing awaits you in the most unanticipated place. I believe this because He is a righteous and loving God, the Almighty who guards His people as the apple of His eye.

출세를 위해서, 성공을 위해서, 자신의 영혼까지도 파는 세상이 되어가고 있다. 더 좋은 줄을 타고, 더 좋은 백을 가지기 위해서, 더 좋은 간판을 달고, 그것들을 마치 당연하다고 여기면서 휘두르기 위하여, 현실은 점점 피비린내 나는 세상이 되어가고 있다. 묵묵히 자신의 갈 길을 가거나, 자신의 신념을 지키면서 살면 바보라고 멸시당하거나, 다들 그렇게 사는데 너는 왜 그러냐고 무시하기도 한다.

We live in a world where people willingly barter their souls for promotion and success. The race to catch a better connection, secure a stronger safety net, and display a flashier title has turned our daily reality into a cutthroat, blood-soaked arena. Those who quietly walk their own paths or hold fast to their core values are often ridiculed as fools, dismissed with a cynical shrug: "Everyone else does it, why can't you?"

얼마 전 하얀거탑의 한 부분을 보다가 그만 눈물이 나고 말았다. 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 성공한 어떤 의사가 원칙을 꿋꿋하게 지키느라 성공하지 못한 채 아직도 그 자리에 머물러 있는 의사보다 더욱 인기를 끌고 있는 모습을 보고, 나는 그만 그 씁쓸함에 눈물이 나고 말았다. 어제는 가게에서 일하는데 어떤 사람이 신형 아우디 자동차를 가게 앞에 주차하고 가게를 들어오더니 반말부터 툭툭 내뱉고 찾는 물건이 없다며 끝까지 반말로 일관하며 나가버린다. 그 사람의 뒷모습이 어찌나 한심스럽던지... 돈의 신이 세상을 지배하고 있다는 생각이 들었다.

Not long ago, while watching a scene from the medical drama White Tower, tears welled up in my eyes. Seeing a doctor who achieved success through ruthless compromise receive accolades, while a principled doctor remained stagnant at his low post, filled me with profound bitterness. Yesterday, while working at the store, a man parked a brand-new Audi right outside, walked in, and immediately spoke to me with condescending rudeness. When he found out we didn't have what he wanted, he spat out a final impudent remark and walked out. Watching his retreating back, he seemed utterly pathetic... and I realized how deeply the god of Mammon rules this world.

하지만 하나님은 기억하고 계신다. 불의하게 얻은 재물은 분명 멸하시며, 자신의 자리에서 정직하게 최선을 다하는 자를 사용하신다. 거짓말은 언젠가 들통나게 되어 있으며, 타인의 자리를 훔치는 것도 때가 되면 진실은 밝혀지게 되어있다. 기독교인이라면 적어도 정직해야 한다. 그리고 굴하지 않아야 한다. 돈의 신에도. 권력의 신에도. 기독교인에게 신이 있다면, 그것은 타인을 사랑하는 그 마음이어야 한다.

Yet, God remembers. He surely dismantles ill-gotten wealth and uses those who do their absolute best with honesty in their given positions. Lies are eventually exposed, and stolen credits are eventually reclaimed by truth. If one claims to be a Christian, they must, at the very least, be honest. They must stand unshaken before the gods of wealth and power. If a Christian recognizes any divinity in this life, it must manifest as a heart that genuinely loves others.

이상의 말들은 이상적인 헛소리에 분명하다. 요즘 같이 어려운 세상에 남을 도우면서 살아야 한다니 그게 무슨 말인가. 자신의 간판 타이틀을 조금이라도 더 과시해서 인정받아야 할 판국에, 바보 돌아이처럼 자신의 자리를 빼앗기고도 멍청하게 가만히 있어보라니, 말이 안 되어도 한참 안 된다. 그러나. 누구 하나 알아주지 않는다고 하더라도 우리는 최대한 남과 더불어서 살아가야 한다. 허영심과 자리에 대한 집착 대신에, 비록 가난할지언정 영혼을 팔지 않고 자신이 믿는 세상을 위해서 걸어가야 한다.

Of course, the words above might sound like naive, idealistic nonsense. In a harsh world like ours, preaching altruism feels entirely out of touch. When survival dictates that we flaunt our credentials and claim recognition, telling someone to sit quietly like an idiot while their place is stolen seems utterly absurd. And yet—even if not a single soul notices, we must strive to live in harmony with our neighbors. Instead of surrendering to vanity and a fixation on status, we ought to walk toward the world we believe in, even if it means being poor, without ever selling our souls.

하나님은 기억하신다. 그러니 그대 억울하고 힘들지라도 기도하고 오늘 하루에 최선을 다하라. 그리고 정직하라. 세상의 유혹에 맞서 싸우라. 우리들이 이 피비린내 나는 세상을 사람냄새 나는 좀 더 나은 세상으로 바꿔야 하지 않겠는가.

God remembers. Therefore, though you may feel wronged and exhausted, pray and pour your heart into today. Be honest. Fight against the temptations of the world. Is it not our calling to transform this cutthroat wilderness into a warmer place filled with true humanity?

페르시아의 저 나무 작대기로 죽이는 형벌은 십자가만큼이나 잔인하다고 한다. 쉽게 말해 나무 작대기로 몸 아래에서부터 등까지를 (장기를 잘 피해) 찔러놓고, 서서히 죽게 만드는 것이다. 이것은 십자가처럼 상징적인 죽음이었다. 하만은 이렇게까지 해서 후환을 완벽하게 없애버리고자 했다. 자신이 생각할 수 있는 가장 더럽고 잔인한 방법으로...

The Persian punishment of impalement on a wooden stake is said to be just as cruel as crucifixion. To put it simply, a wooden stake was driven through the body from the lower abdomen up to the back—carefully avoiding vital organs to prolong agony—leaving the victim to die a slow death. Like the cross, it was a deeply symbolic execution. Haman intended to erase his enemy completely, utilizing the vilest and most brutal method he could devise.

그런데 역설적으로 거기에 당하는 것은 자신이다. 잠언에도 나오지만, 악인이 스스로 덫을 놓고, 거기에 걸리는 것과 마찬가지다. 물론 자기가 걸릴 줄은 몰랐겠지...

Yet, paradoxically, he was the one who ended up on that very stake. As the Book of Proverbs reminds us, the wicked lay a snare for themselves and fall into their own trap. Of course, he never imagined he would be the one caught in it.

결국 뿌린 대로 거둔다고, 선한 사람이 선한 곳에 올바르게 심으면, 그 열매가 악하기가 힘들다. 반대로 악한 마음만을 항상 담고 있으면, 그 마음은 부메랑이 되어서 자신을 치기 마련이다. 그래서 예수님은 베드로에게 "칼을 내리라"고 말씀하셨다. 분노는 잠깐의 만족은 줘도 평화를 주지 못한다. 기독교인은 심판자가 아니라, 최선을 다하고 하나님의 뜻을 구하고 기다리는 사람이 되어야 할 것이다. 자기 뜻대로 일을 계획대로 착착 해나가던 사울은 망하지만, 치명적 실수 속에서도 하나님을 울면서 찾던 다윗은 주가 기뻐하신 것처럼...

Ultimately, we reap what we sow. When a good person plants seeds of integrity in fertile ground, it is rare for the fruit to be evil. Conversely, if a heart harbors nothing but malice, that malice invariably returns as a boomerang to strike its owner. This is precisely why Jesus commanded Peter to "put your sword back into its place." Rage may offer a fleeting satisfaction, but it never yields peace. A Christian is not called to be the judge, but to be one who does their best, seeks God's will, and waits. Saul, who orchestrated everything according to his own calculations, collapsed in ruin; but David, who wept and sought God even in the depths of his fatal failures, remained a man after God's own heart.

2026년의 영감

인과라는 말이 참 의미 있습니다.

구글 블로그 시작 약 2주가 흘렀고, 드디어 미국에서도 영문 수록글이 검색에 오르게 되었습니다.

아무 소득이 없었던 것 같은 일이었지만, 결국 이 글들은 우연히 누군가에게 닿게 되리라는 확신.

그것도 때로는 국경과 언어를 넘어서 닿는다면, 아주 신기한 도전이 될 것 같습니다.

예를 들어 제가 순전한 기독교 (C.S.루이스) 라든지, 팀 켈러 목사님의 책을 읽을 수 있는 것처럼.

그 반대의 경우도 가능하다고 생각하니, 나름의 문서 선교적인 보람이 작게나마 느껴집니다.

그러고 보니, 순전한 기독교에선 지적인 게으름을 하나님은 별로 좋아하지 않는다고 적혀 있습니다.

하나님을 알아가는 노력은 무엇보다 의미 있는 일 중에 하나 입니다.

설교를 읽고 생각하며 하나님의 섭리를 생각해 볼 때, 하나님의 역사는 생동감이 느껴집니다.

바꿔 말한다면, 역사에서 일어났던 일들이 담겨 있으므로, 정직이 얼마나 귀한가를 생각합니다.

모르드개는 어쩌면 차라리 정직하게 살다가 죽더라도 후회가 없다고 생각했을지도 모릅니다.

그러나 결국 모르드개는 에스더 서에 기록되어 있습니다.

게으름이 많았습니다. 얼마 전 통화에서 홍 목사님은 지금이라도 늦지 않았으니,

성실하게 힘을 내보라고 응원해주셨습니다.

인터넷이라는 망망대해에, 좋은 글 한 편을 남겨놓는 소박한 기쁨은 생각보다 제법 큽니다.

청년시절의 글이 (하만 같은 사람에 대한) 질투와 짜증이었다면,

지금의 덧붙임 글은 하나님에게 성실하지 못했던 내 모습에 대한, 반성과 회개 입니다.
