(Gwangjong of Goryeo’s Reforms: Marveling at Politics!)

On a bright, sunny spring day, I reflect on King Gwangjong of Goryeo. Evaluations of Gwangjong are mixed. While he is viewed as a reformist monarch who implemented the civil service examination (Gwageo), he was also a ruler who took it upon himself to carry out a merciless "bloody purge of local gentry." One could say he was a figure determined to lay the foundations of Goryeo, even at the cost of dirtying his own hands. Naturally, his actions are terrifying, yet they offer a glimpse into the art of combat. I believe it is a historical truth that fighting against vested interests requires an attitude that is anything but lenient.

(The Tribe of Dan That Went North) - 홍종일목사

The land God assigned to the tribe of Dan included both the coastal plains and the hill country. However, the Philistines and the Amorites were already living there.

Because the enemies possessed iron chariots, the tribe of Dan was driven out of the plains and forced into the mountains. Consequently, the Amorites firmly resolved to occupy and settle in the fertile plains.

What we must realize is that when God distributed the land, He did not hand over an empty, ready-made territory.

The land already had occupants, and these natives were advanced nations equipped with iron-age civilization.

Facing the terrifying threat of advancing iron chariots, the people of Dan were consumed with hiding themselves. In the end, they failed to claim the land God had given them and remained hidden away in the mountains.

What became of this tribe of Dan?

As a final recourse, God granted the tribe of Dan a hero named Samson, entrusting him with His divine work.

Yet, Samson squandered that ultimate opportunity solely in pursuit of his own carnal desires.

Having forfeited any further chances, the tribe of Dan eventually selected a small group to search for alternative territory to the north. It was there that they encountered the carved idol of Micah.

Ultimately, a mere 600 men of the Danite clan invaded the north, established the city of Dan, and set up an idol there. This was a tragic decline for a tribe whose army alone numbered an impressive 64,000 when they first entered Canaan.

Driven into the mountains and cut off from their food supply, they still failed to wake up, choosing instead to live a hidden existence to avoid the iron chariots.

Though they did not perish on the battlefield, they ultimately suffered a loss far more devastating than any defeat in active warfare.

After the tribe of Dan abandoned their post and departed for the north, the inheritance originally assigned to them by God was taken over by their brother tribe, Ephraim.

God can accomplish His work through absolutely anyone. If that is so, let us choose to be the protagonists of history whom God uses.

If we simply fade away into the background of history, the loss is entirely our own.

If our brothers can achieve it, is it truly impossible for us?

They went north, became deeply corrupted by idolatry, and in the very end, were blotted out from the list of the sealed in the Book of Revelation.

Personal Reflections by Seebook)

What can we possibly learn from the story of the tribe of Dan, which ultimately faced total ruin?

What was the catalyst that reduced a formidable force of 64,000 down to a mere 600? It was fear. It was avoidance.

Constantly fleeing from their calling, defeated and frustrated in their spiritual battles, they were ultimately bound for destruction.

During my school days, I possessed an almost absolute confidence when it came to studying. To me, studying was the easiest thing in the world.

Later on, when I managed to complete the entire six-year curriculum of middle and high school in just six months through qualification exams, my arrogance pierced the sky, making me believe I could achieve absolutely anything. When I challenged the college entrance exam, I lived with the sole, grandiose fixation of entering a prestigious university.

Looking back now, it is truly embarrassing. Even upon deeper reflection, those younger days were filled with a deeply shameful vanity.

My illusion was shattered just a year or two later. No matter how many times I took the exams, my results were nothing more than mediocre and ordinary.

Since I had been too busy fooling around, the reality returned to me in the form of miserable scores. In that sense, the world was remarkably fair.

From that point onward, I constantly evaded exams. Frustrated by a sense of defeat, I suppose my life became a continuous escape from reality.

As stated in the sermon: "If our brothers can achieve it, is it truly impossible for us? They went north, became deeply corrupted by idolatry..." Yet, I avoided even the things I was fully capable of doing. It was due to my deeply ingrained habit of fleeing from reality.

Instead of focusing on what truly mattered, I obsessed over insignificant things and poured my heart into them—a lifestyle that was nothing less than a waste of my given talents.

Starting from this very moment, I intend to focus entirely on the tasks I can actually perform. I am determined to wake up. I am making a conscious, deliberate effort to remind myself: "Let do what I can do!"

To be honest, I am filled with great fear, and I know I will encounter numerous hardships ahead. However, I must no longer run away.

I have realized that diving headfirst into danger is a far better path than doing nothing or avoiding the challenge. Now, it is time to put this realization into practice.

Running away just once—having that turn into a habit, and ultimately failing to overcome that wall... That is the single most dangerous thing we must guard against.

Before it is too late, before this life comes to an end, I am going to throw myself into the fight one more time with genuine, fierce effort. It is perfectly fine to get hurt! For each and every one of us is, ultimately, nothing but pure possibility.

(The Founding Process of Goryeo and Taejo Wanggeon's Dilemma)

The political chapter of the Middle Ages has begun. This is the Goryeo Dynasty, boasting a history of about 500 years. Opening its curtains in 918 and lasting until 1392, it is impossible to understand this long span of time all at once. It is best to organize it piece by piece through periodization to make it easier to comprehend. First, closely examining the leading forces that guided Goryeo is an excellent way to grasp the historical flow. At this point, who were the main protagonists of Goryeo? Categorizing by those leading groups yields the following:
