(Ancient Cultural History 2 - Wonhyo and Uisang, the Core of Ancient Buddhism)

In the late 7th century, with the onset of the Unified Silla period, Buddhism established a structured system of faith and received a major theoretical upgrade. This marked the advancement of Buddhism. As a starting point and a monumental figure in Buddhist history, we must look at "Wonhyo." Wonhyo was truly incredible. He was both a theorist and a practitioner, as well as a reformer. On the other hand, he is also famous as a fallen monk who broke his vows. He dressed casually, got married, sang beautifully, and danced... While ordinary monks usually dressed neatly, practiced silence, and gave off a simple, austere vibe, Wonhyo gained an awakening about ultimate truth through the famous skull water incident and spoke immense truths without any restraint.

As examined in the previous post, religions in their early stages often become the possession and logic of the ruling class. However, instead of the difficult, text-centered Buddhism of the early days, Wonhyo propagated the Pure Land sect (Amitabha faith), making Buddhism accessible to the common people. To summarize this long story in a few words: "Wonhyo popularized Buddhism." While one could simply memorize it as a short phrase, looking at it only that way leaves a bit to be desired. Let’s look a little deeper.

Wonhyo taught that anyone could go to the Pure Land (paradise) simply by chanting "Namu Amitabha." If we briefly consider Buddhist doctrine, the Buddha is not a unique, solitary deity. Humans can become Buddhas through awakening, and Shakyamuni is referred to as the Buddha of the present world. And there is a Buddha of the paradise world, who is none other than Amitabha Buddha. Therefore, "Namu Amitabha" means "I return and rely on the Buddha of paradise." Since the path to paradise was as simple as chanting "Namu Amitabha," the common people absolutely loved it. In a way, Wonhyo dragged down the exclusive Buddhism of the ruling class and gave it to the masses. Isn't that truly magnificent? (Personally, this man Wonhyo almost gave me the vibe of a revolutionary. A person who can balance both theory and practice is truly admirable.)

Wonhyo advocated the Simmun Hwajeng-ron (Harmonization of Ten Doctrines), an exceptional and astonishing philosophy that views conflict and harmony as one. Religions typically present a dichotomy, usually telling people to accumulate good and avoid opposing evil. For instance, if there is ugliness and beauty, Wonhyo essentially argues that ultimate harmony is supreme, which is incredibly profound. Consequently, he does not separate or distinguish between the Buddha and sentient beings. A method to see even polar opposite concepts as one—those ten gates are called the Simmun Hwajeng-ron. The philosophy of Wonyung-hoetong (Harmonious Interpenetration), meaning everything connects as one, is also Wonhyo's argument. Furthermore, his Ilsim (One Mind) philosophy emphasizes that reality is fleeting, the mind is what truly matters, and thus one must reflect deeply. This part naturally brings to mind Wonhyo’s famous skull water story. The core truth is that everything depends on the mind. Even looking back today, his insight is truly remarkable.

It is deeply impressive that during an era when the common people were marginalized from religion and burdened by the forced labor of building temples and pagodas, he established an independent philosophical framework and actively practiced it. His words, "If the mind dies, it is no different from a skull," still carry immense weight today. If we live mechanically without a warm heart, how are we any different from a skeleton? Being alive is proven by one's mindset, isn't it? I hope we can throw away a skeleton-like existence and possess the vitality to shout, "My heart is truly alive!~" :) Looking at it this way, the fact that Wonhyo could enjoy music and dance might have been his way of fully celebrating being alive.

Now, let’s look at Wonhyo’s close friend, Uisang. Uisang advocated Hwaeom (Avatamsaka) philosophy and developed the Hwaeom sect. Uisang spoke of Il-jeuk-da Da-jeuk-il, which literally means "One is all, and all is one." Viewing the many as one contributed significantly to strengthening the state and royal authority. For a state pursuing integration policies upon becoming Unified Silla, this idea was a perfect match. Providing such a theoretical background to assert that everyone is one around the king can be considered Uisang's great achievement. Buddhism played a massive role in constructing a harmonious and unified nation.

We must also mention the monk Hyecho's Wang ocheonchukguk-jeon (Memoir of the Pilgrimage to the Five Kingdoms of India). As a travelogue recording his journey through the five kingdoms of India and various surrounding countries, it serves as an invaluable historical source. This manuscript was only discovered in the 20th century, and when reflecting on Hyecho, it is truly astonishing. In the 8th century, Hyecho bet his entire life, pouring everything into traveling foreign lands on foot. Seeing that there was someone who lived like this beyond mere survival prompts us to ask a fundamental question: "How shall we live?" Will we spend our entire lives frantically handling only the immediate tasks right in front of us day by day? Or will we live by directly fulfilling "what matters most to us," which we have kept deep in our hearts? Hyecho’s pioneering spirit in challenging what few others dared to do and recording it is also highly impressionable.

Now, let’s consider the trends of Buddhism during the late Silla period. Buddhism had been centered around the Gyoct (Doctrinal sect), which focused on doctrines and scriptures to support the strengthening of royal power. However, toward the end of Silla, the Seon (Zen) sect, which emphasized practice and meditation, finally began to surge in popularity. Come to think of it, in a world that knew absolutely nothing about Buddhism, the starting point inevitably had to be texts. Yet, as Silla entered its chaotic late period, behavioral contradictions kept arising—such as the flaws of the bone-rank system and fierce throne battles among the true-bones—causing scriptures to lose their appeal. Consequently, everyone in the provinces welcomed the Seon sect. The philosophy of Seon, which claimed that anyone could become a Buddha through enlightenment, was a brilliant idea that perfectly resonated with the local gentry (hojok).

Consider the concept of Wang-jeuk-bul. If the king is Buddha, and if I can become a Buddha by gaining enlightenment, wouldn't that mean I could also become a king? While the Seon sect was introduced around the time of Unified Silla, it is crucial to note that it became exceptionally popular during the late Silla period. Its alliance with the local gentry forces is also significant. (Ah, speaking of the local gentry of late Silla, the theory of Feng Shui was also immensely popular. Doseon, who introduced Feng Shui, even prophesied the fall of the Silla dynasty. Seeing how it eventually collapsed, Doseon seems to have been a figure with an extraordinary sense of the times.)

Finally, let’s look at ancient Confucianism. Goguryeo had Taehak, a higher educational institution, and Gyeongdang in the provinces, which taught both Confucian classics and martial arts. During the North-South States period, Jujagam was established in Balhae, and Gukhak in Silla. Among notable figures, Seol Chong (who was also Wonhyo's son) was a highly educated Confucian scholar who provided direction to the king through his work, Hwawang-gye (Admonition to the King of Flowers). It is good to keep in mind that Confucianism had its place in antiquity as well. Additionally, Kim Dae-mun of Silla compiled independent books such as Hwarang-segi (Chronicles of Hwarang) and Hansan-gi.

In late Silla, there was a famous scholar from the head-rank six (6-duplum) class: the foreign-educated Choi Chi-won! He was said to be an extraordinarily brilliant writer, and upon returning to Silla, he submitted a series of reform proposals known as Simu-chaek to address national transformation. However, it provoked fierce backlash from the aristocracy and was ultimately rejected. It is said that Choi Chi-won subsequently fell into despair and retreated to the periphery. As a side note, it was actually Choi Chi-won who named the area around Busan's Dongbaekseom Island "Haeundae." A beautiful landscape that Choi Chi-won deeply loved! In the summer, it would be wonderful to see Dongbaekseom in Haeundae and walk along Dalmaji-gil. Ah, is it too crowded to enjoy? Haha. In the next post, let's explore ancient science and ancient tombs.

Reflecting on today's inspiration, I return to Wonhyo and the popularization of Buddhism. Smart people often face one of two choices. The first is to use their knowledge to build entry barriers. They create a system to keep others out and kick away the ladder for anyone trying to climb up, demanding a steep price to enter. However, some people act differently. They dedicate their lives to "lowering the entry barriers and popularizing knowledge." Believing that everyone should be able to see it, they endlessly ponder the methods; believing that everyone should have access, they make every effort to consider the perspective of the powerless. When considering the rise and fall of any organization, the crucial point seems to be whether they build more "entry barriers" or lower them. If only a few can see, that exclusivity itself becomes a powerful form of authority, which can mark the beginning of corruption. The fact that the Gyoct, which monopolized information and provided it tailored only to the royal court's taste, ultimately lost the hearts of the common people might be a valid insight even for our current era. If we bolster the privileges of the few and set up entry barriers, the end will inevitably be corruption and collapse.

(The Founding Process of Goryeo and Taejo Wanggeon's Dilemma)

The political chapter of the Middle Ages has begun. This is the Goryeo Dynasty, boasting a history of about 500 years. Opening its curtains in 918 and lasting until 1392, it is impossible to understand this long span of time all at once. It is best to organize it piece by piece through periodization to make it easier to comprehend. First, closely examining the leading forces that guided Goryeo is an excellent way to grasp the historical flow. At this point, who were the main protagonists of Goryeo? Categorizing by those leading groups yields the following:
