(Ancient Cultural History 1 - The Role and Characteristics of Ancient Buddhism)

Buddhism is particularly important in ancient culture. In fact, I believe it is worthy of dedicating multiple posts to it. Therefore, in this session, we will examine and reflect on the role and characteristics of Buddhism. What are your thoughts on religion? Perhaps due to the historical abuses of religion in our country, there seems to be a large number of atheists recently. Religion usually takes death and connection to another world as its themes, which naturally leads people to take an interest in it as they reach middle or old age. Yet, whatever the religion may be, it often feels as though it functions as an extension of shamanism or ancestor worship here in Korea.

If there is a distinct characteristic of religion in Korea, it is the "please do this for me" faith. You wouldn't believe how earnestly parents pray and make wishes in Buddhism. At the recommendation of my esteemed teacher Mr. Shin, I once visited a small temple that hangs lotus lanterns. I vividly remember people carefully hanging colorful lanterns, each carrying their own heartfelt wishes. In Christianity as well, many attend special prayer meetings before major exams or pray from the crack of dawn hoping for a prosperous life. But here is a question: Is "please do this for me" truly the essence of religion? Shouldn't the real essence be the "active practice" of love and compassion, rather than just wishing for one's own success? I often think about the Buddhist concept of Dae-ja-dae-bi (Great Compassion) that Mr. Shin mentioned. It means a heart that brings joy to others and relieves their suffering—a heart that loves and pities all living beings. How moving and wonderful is that? T.T... (*Of course, as you can tell from the category, I am a Christian, but I try to guard against having an overly biased view toward other religions.)

Now, let’s look at ancient Buddhism in earnest. Since Buddhism is a foreign religion introduced from China, let's trace the flow of its acceptance. Buddhism entered Goguryeo from the Former Qin dynasty of China and was officially recognized during the reign of King Sosurim. Around the same time, Baekje also received Buddhism from the Eastern Jin dynasty, and it was officially recognized under King Chimnyu. Both kingdoms rapidly adopted Buddhism at the state level in the 4th century. Why was that? First of all, by its nature, Buddhism encountered relatively little conflict upon its arrival. It is less exclusive and can easily connect with folk beliefs. It blended naturally with shamanism, allowing shrines like Samsindang or Chilseonggak to exist even within regular temple grounds. (Additionally, we can connect this to how Goguryeo later transmitted Buddhism to Silla, and Baekje transmitted it to Japan.)

The key point is that the royal court particularly favored it. The concept of Wang-jeuk-bul (The King is Buddha) was highly beneficial for elevating royal authority far and wide. The aristocracy also loved it because it served to legitimize their privileges. In particular, the doctrine of Eop-seol (Karma) seems to have functioned as an incredibly powerful tool. It essentially says, "The reason you are poor now? It’s because of your sins in a past life, so shut up, obey, accumulate virtue, and live diligently." To put it simply, it is: "It’s your karma, so just endure your miserable life." In this way, it rationalized the wealthy lifestyle of the nobility. This line of thought persists today; some elderly people still blame themselves, saying, "What sin did I commit in my past life to suffer like this?" while young people playfully say, "Did that guy save a country in his past life? How did he end up with such a beauty?"

To put it somewhat harshly, a severe side effect of religion can be that it suppresses the grievances and reformist will of the ruled class. Of course, living with gratitude and kindness is fundamentally good. However, the moment we look at grueling hardships and say, "Well, that's just how life is..." it tends to shift entirely into "blaming the individual." This direction can be dangerous. It blinds people to a social structure that continuously drives them into poverty. We must be able to ask these questions: "Is life really meant to be nothing but hard? Is it right to turn a blind eye to reality by focusing only on past lives or paradise (heaven)?"

Meanwhile, in Silla, the roots of folk beliefs were so strong (come to think of it, they also held tightly to clan traditions) that accepting Buddhism was no easy task. It wasn't until the 6th century, during the reign of King Beopheung, that Buddhism was finally recognized officially alongside the martyrdom of Ichadon. Interestingly, Silla went on to become a kingdom deeply defined by Buddhism. Silla's representative cultural heritage is none other than Bulguksa Temple. It is featured on the 10-won coin and is also a UNESCO World Heritage site :) If you ever visit Gyeongju, I highly recommend taking your time to appreciate the scenery of Bulguksa. The temple houses numerous national treasures, including the Dabotap Pagoda and the Three-Story Stone Pagoda (Seokgatap). (National Treasures No. 20, 21, 22, 23... and so on.)

One cannot omit the fact that a defining characteristic of Korean Buddhism is Hoguk-bulgyo (State-Protection Buddhism). Let’s take a brief look at the Sesok-ogye (Five Commandments for Secular Life) of Hwarangdo. It includes the phrase Salsaeng-yutaek, which means "choose carefully when taking life." At first glance, this might seem confusing, and some students have questioned it. Indeed, religion often mutates to some degree when settling into different countries. (According to teacher Choi Tae-seong's explanation on the origin of temples, monks in India found it problematic to travel during the rainy season. Countless tiny creatures would appear, and wandering around risked stepping on and killing them. Thus, they began building temples to reside in during the rainy season.) In other words, original Buddhism views even a single insect as a precious life. It strictly prohibits killing.

Therefore, while the phrase Salsaeng-yutaek contradicts core Buddhist ideology, it shows that Silla adopted a "pragmatic view of Buddhism." Silla had to wage war against Baekje and Goguryeo, and strictly forbidding killing would make combat extremely difficult. Considering this, religion easily becomes a tool for the state, rarely outrunning national interests. It has a strong tendency to march in lockstep with the nation's situation.

Let's consider Hwangnyongsa Temple, once counted among Silla's three greatest treasures. Its Nine-Story Wooden Pagoda was a massive structure reaching over 60 meters high, and records say it was built with the belief that "constructing this would make neighboring countries submit to Silla." When you connect this to the notion that the pagoda represents Buddha himself, you can feel Silla's colossal determination to leap forward as a powerful nation through this massive Buddha. In this way, Silla became a country deeply in love with Buddhism. The Tomb of King Munmu of Unified Silla is another excellent example. King Munmu was given a Buddhist burial, and his royal tomb lies in the sea, reflecting his resolute determination to protect the East Sea and fend off Japanese invaders even in death.

I think my explanation got a bit lengthy, but when it comes to early Buddhism, it would be great to remember three main points: it contributed to strengthening royal power (Wang-jeuk-bul), it validated aristocratic privileges (Eop-seol), and it created an unprecedented new culture (pagodas, Buddhist statues, etc.). Additionally, the existence of Eop-seol and its nature as state-protection Buddhism are also vital. In the next post, let's explore the giants of ancient Buddhism, Wonhyo and Uisang. Master Wonhyo is truly incredible and no joke! I sincerely hope you can view and enjoy ancient culture with delight. I quietly pray this won't be a cultural history that leaves you exhausted from mere memorization.

Today's inspiration leads me to the thought: "Let’s not rely on religion." It is only human to want to lean on something when we are weary and exhausted. However, the problem arises when we think "everything will solve itself if I just lean on religion." That borders on escapism, which is problematic. For instance, Karl Marx criticized religion, stating that it can act as the opium of the people and offers only an illusory happiness to the masses. If life is such that happiness can only be found in illusions, wouldn't that be a "sad life"? Are we truly beings destined to live unhappily in the present, shuffling through life helplessly while declaring that living is nothing but suffering?

I hope that future religion will make people happier "in reality," earn respect by leading the charge in taking practical action to build a brighter world, and go even further to perform wonders that interest groups find difficult to achieve. Ah, was that perhaps too grand and impossible an expectation? :) At any rate, it pains me to see religion getting as much flak as politics, so I shared a bit of my personal view. To sum it up: No more escapism! While breaking away from reality to claim a "mental victory" is occasionally necessary, I believe our lives can truly begin to change only when we fundamentally look reality in the eye and start taking action for change.

(The Founding Process of Goryeo and Taejo Wanggeon's Dilemma)

The political chapter of the Middle Ages has begun. This is the Goryeo Dynasty, boasting a history of about 500 years. Opening its curtains in 918 and lasting until 1392, it is impossible to understand this long span of time all at once. It is best to organize it piece by piece through periodization to make it easier to comprehend. First, closely examining the leading forces that guided Goryeo is an excellent way to grasp the historical flow. At this point, who were the main protagonists of Goryeo? Categorizing by those leading groups yields the following:
